   (lah NEEN-yah) [Spanish: the girl] A cool, slow, counterclockwise current in the equatorial Pacific Ocean that develops in summer, often encompassing most of the northern Pacific, and causing frequently devastating disturbances in the weather of the Americas because of its abnormal temperature.
